Missouri-born Thomas Stearns Eliot left the United States for the Sorbonne University in Paris. In 1915 he began working as a school teacher in London. In that same year, Eliot's The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock was published. The Waste Land, published in 1922, is considered by experts to be one of the most influential poetic works of the twentieth century. Despite his conversion to orthodox Christianity, Eliot divorced his first wife and maintained a secular religious viewpoint.
